Shadows on Water

You return to the village. The wind has briefly swept all clouds from the sky above the village, and the little wooden houses are washed in light. You feel empty, but surprisingly at peace with things. You send word to Fang at the local inn that you want to invite him to your house for dinner, and that you have made a decision.

At home you have a while before Fang arrives. You leave the door open for him, and you start to write a letter, so that you may better explain your decision. You begin thus;

As you are writing this last word, a gust of wind blows through the door, blowing over your inkpot and flooding your letter with a lake of black.

"Damn!" you shout, just as Fang appears at the door.

"I'm sorry. I will return later."

"No, come in. I have made my decision."
