Uncertain Fortunes

When all the guilty townspeople had been reduced to a pile of bones and chunks of gore, Ore noticed that no one gave him looks of hatred. In fact, for the most part, no one looked at him at all. Even the guards, so bloated with self-importance, seemed to avoid him. The only thing that bothered him at all, was the fact that his adopted family seemed equally distrustful of him.

Ore felt sadness wash over him as he became more isolate from everyone he had ever known and loved. Rather than focusing on the living, he closely attended his studies with the dead. He took notice of the most ancient spirits,- and they took notice of him. Ore was haunted waking and sleeping,- and it was a relief not to be completely alone.

Finally, tired of the sidelong glances full of terror, Ore left his home on the outskirts of town and wandered further into the big city. There he was one of the crowd, and no one knew enough of him to fear him. He nestled into the anonymity, enjoying the variety of transients. It seemed at last, that Ore had found peace in the very heart of Edenton.
