"Oh, wow! Thanks!" he said, screeching directly into Nerek's ear. "I can't wait to show Quartus!"

"Why?" blurted Nerek.

"Quartus is a Dagon-asterd," Ren said, gloating. "It means he can disguise himself as other people. And he trusts me to keep that a secret."

"Wait, so Quartus knows about his heritage? I didn't think half-dragons could actually inherit abilities from..."

"Shut up! I'm not done with my story!" said Ren, tugging on Nerek's sleeve. "Anyway. Whenever I'm feeling down, Quartus shifts into someone I hate and he makes them say funny things. So I'm gonna do the same for him! I think I'll turn into his mom," he added, trying to pull the cork out.

"NO! I mean... no, that might not be a good idea. Would you like it if someone made fun of your mom?"

"I guess not..." he replied, holding out the bottle to Nerek and waving it around impatiently until it was uncorked. "I'll go with our tutor instead. Thanks for your help, mister not-allowed pilgrim!" With that, Ren ran giggling from the room, preventing any chance that Nerek might be able to walk down that hallway unnoticed.

"Damn noisy kids," he muttered under his breath. "Still, he might be able to cheer up his royal bratness better than I ever couild."

Nerek ran into Lione as he headed downstairs, who insisted on another payment to ensure her silence. He kept his eye out for another opportunity to try and sneak upstairs... but it seemed unnecessary. Quartus allowed himself to have a visual presense during dinner for the first time during Nerek's stay, and the kid was grinning from ear to ear.

"I think I actually pulled this off," he said to Lione.

"Well, congratulations!" she said, flashing him a flirty smile. "I bet you'd be even more successful if you gave me a few more coins. I've almost got enough saved up for a breast enhancement spell."
