Inside the Garden

You slot your hands into the pattern of the gates and start to pull yourself up. It's much easier going that you expected and before long you are almost at the top.

Pausing for breath you feel a sharp pain in your left hand and pull it away from the gate. A small crescent of deep gashes rings your thumb. It looks as though you were bitten by some kind of rodent.

You peer at the gate where your hand had been and you notice that one of the small faces carved into the gate's design has a ring of blood around its mouth. You stare at it, unnerved.

Under the gaze of your disbelieving eyes the tiny face swivels towards you and smiles, its tiny vicious teeth pointed and bloody.
