The Island of Destiny

You decide not to enter the tunnel...it just seems too risky and you don't even have the slightest idea where it came from. The thought doesn't even cross your mind that this might be where you are supposed to go to "rescue" whoever left that note, but the main thought on your mind right now is rescue and to care about other affairs right now just seems a little ridiculous.

You continue hiking through the bulk of the island, making it through jungles and valleys. Several times you stop to scavenge for food and you are successful in finding a few variants of berries and shrubs that you (and your stomache) deem acceptable to eat. The amount of food you do consume however isn't really enough to completely replenish your energy, but somehow you still manage to stumble across the entire island. By nightfall, you have made it back to the shore, except now you are on a completely different side of the island.

Just as you are about to crash on the beach though, you see a spotlight in the distance on the ocean. You watch in silence as the light comes closer to the shore and finally you see that it is a boat producing the light. It is a substantial sized motorboat and you can make out two figures on it. Could this really be your chance at rescue?

A day later, you are sitting on the edge of the boat, gazing at the water zipping by. The people who rescued you, Mr. and Mrs. Novak, couldn't believe that they found you on their private, resort island. You explained your disgruntling story to them and although it seemed they were a bit skeptical, they saw that you were harmless and agreed to give you a ride back to the mainland. Turns out California was just an hour away the entire time.

As you glance ahead, you see the rise of buildings in the distance. You are so relieved to be back in society although there is a slight nagging in the back of your mind. You realize that this feeling is the slight regret that you didn't venture down into that tunnel. It seems that you were given the opportunity to have a grand adventure, yet all you were focused on was escaping. But that's ridiculous right? It was dangerous for you on that island, you had no idea what was there.

But was it dangerous? You suppose you'll never know...just like you'll never know who wanted to be rescued by you. Or how you got to the island in the first place.

But it seems that for you, perhaps being on the island wasn't really your destiny. Your destiny right now sounds a lot more like driving to the next corner McDonalds and grabbing a Quarter Pounder.
