Hall of Infinite Doors

UNTITLED NOVEL

Chapter I-

In a realm alien to our own lived a man named Ralph. Ralph had lived a fairly dull and uneventful life. Not much had happened for Ralph and he had been content with this for a long while. Eventually though, not doing anything became boring to Ralph as it would to most people and he eventually declared that he was bored. For some reason declaring that he was bored was very difficult for Ralph. It took a long time of being bored before Ralph could actually admit he was bored. Finally Ralph had hit a threshold and could no longer deny the fact that he was bored. The pain of admitting it was exceeded by the pain of remaining bored. Once Ralph and determined he was bored he decided that there was something he needed to do. This thing would temporarily cure Ralph's boredom. He decided he would look around his house first to determine what he could do to keep from getting bored.

Ralph lived in a one room house that was on ground level. This room was quite small and unexceptional. It had white walls, a white ceiling, a hard wood floor made out of pine wood and a single window which gave him a view of his backyard. There was also a door from which Ralph could leave his house though up until this point in time he never had. This is one of the many reasons why Ralph was bored. He began to look around the house for something to do so he would not be bored and finally he set his eyes upon a piece of paper lying on the floor. Ralph lacked any instruments with which he could write on the paper or manipulate it in any way so he simply picked it up with his hands. He began to attempt to fold a paper airplane but was unable to successfully do so. After several attempts and the paper having been folded many times over he determined that folding paper was not fun and instead crumpled it up into a ball and threw it out the window. Ralph was once again bored and needed another activity to keep him occupied.

After looking around his one room house a while longer Ralph found a plastic spoon lying on the ground. He picked up the spoon and examined it for a while and determined he had no use for it at the current time. So, as he had done before he picked up the spoon and threw it out the window. Ralph then picked up the final object in his house. It was a block of pine wood left over from when his hardwood floors had been put in. Ralph began throwing the block of pine wood up in the air and then catching it. He did this for quite some time but eventually grew bored with the activity. He then decided to slide the block across the hardwood floor and determine the coefficient of friction that the floor held with a block. He soon realized he lacked the equipment necessary to measure this and seeing his dreams crushed cast the block out the window like he had the other three objects. With nothing left in his home to have fun with Ralph stood up and opened his front door and walked outside.

Chapter II-

The first step outside his front door was a difficult one for Ralph because it was the first time he had ever left his home. He soon grew comfortable with the thought of leaving after he reminded himself of how horrible boredom really was. Upon walking outside he stood in his back yard. His back yard was a small plot of grass floating in a void. It is strange how his house remained well lit and light filled his backyard even though it existed in a void. There was no source of the light, it just seemed to exist. This defiance of the natural laws of physics confused Ralph and he contemplated it for a while. After some time Ralph determined that it was something he could not discover the answers to by standing in his doorway. He walked a few feet away from the house closing the door behind him.

The major component of Ralph's lawn was grass. There was nice green lush grass growing on his small lawn floating in the void. This particular type of grass was not like grass we have on our planet. It was a grass that consisted of high number of carbon chains and other artificial non naturally occurring compounds. This is of course because his entire home and yard were constructed and placed in the void for him to live within. Nothing about it is actually naturally occurring; instead it was all produced in a factory. The factory that produces things of this nature has become very adept at creating such things, synthetic materials meant to mimic natural ones so their products actually looked like and for all purposes resembled real grass. An ordinary person would certainly mistake his lawn for a real healthy lawn when in fact it is purely artificial. There were even tiny errors put in and imperfections and flaws added to make it seem more real. The company did not do this all manually of course. They created a series of chaotic equations to rule how the grass was created. These chaotic systems were very similar to the actual systems that ruled natural plants. This was the nature of Ralph's yard.
Ralph laid down on the grass and it felt very good. He loved the feeling of the springy grass against his body, it was very comfortable. He then rolled around on the grass for a while and pulled some up out of the ground and threw it into the air allowing it to shower down upon him. After playing in the grass for a while Ralph felt himself begin to dose off into a catnap. He then began to have a dream.

Chapter III

This was the first dream Ralph had ever had because up until he declared he was bored he had been doing nothing, absolutely nothing and dreaming is included in that. This dream was an abstract dream in which things did not make much sense and there was little cohesion to the events that occurred. At first Ralph only saw the color yellow. The color yellow surrounded him and that was all he could experience. Then, after some amount of time he could not discern, he began to hear drums. These drums were the kinds of drums an African tribe would use in their rituals. The drums grew louder and louder and then suddenly Ralph found himself standing on an orange block still surrounded by the color yellow. With the African drums still going Ralph saw a blue pyramid float up from the yellow vastness itself. It was moving at quite a considerable speed and soon left his view. After this many other blue pyramids began to do the same thing. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of blue pyramids rose up and disappeared just as quickly as they came. Then, suddenly, the African drums stopped and the yellow color changed to a grey. The orange block Ralph was standing on disappeared and he began to fall. After falling for a while Ralph felt himself begin to slow down until he came to a halt. Then there, suspended in the grayness he saw a humanoid figure approach. This humanoid figure was simply a black silhouette. It seemed to take the shape of a tall thin bald man. As it approached and grew larger Ralph began to realize it was much larger than a normal man, and once it was close he saw that it was well over ten times his height. The silhouette began to dance around Ralph and then in an instant shattered into a million tiny black pieces. These pieces all morphed into tiny silhouettes that started vibrating in place. They then began a circular orbit around Ralph until the completely blocked out the grey light around him. In utter darkness he floated for a while.

Eventually the darkness began to fade and Ralph found himself standing in his lawn floating in the void. He was not awake though, but instead inside a very realistic dream. For a moment he thought himself awake until he realized that something wasn't right. Floating in the void suspended above his house was a massive white sphere. The sphere had to large black circles on it that resembled eyes and a larger black rectangle. The rectangle began to move and the sphere began to speak in a dull monotone voice. "Ralph, you have now entered my section of your dream. What I am about to tell you is very important for I hold the cure to your boredom. You must leave your house and this small reality that you have lived in for so long. There is nothing for you here but an entire world to explore beyond it. You will partake in a journey without an end in which you will experience many different things. You will see and learn so much and do so many things you otherwise never would have if you stayed here. Do you understand what I am saying?"

Ralph thought for a minute and then asked a question. "Yes but how do I leave this place. It is an isolated reality… how do I find another place to go when all I can see is the void?"

The sphere quickly responded as if it had been anticipating the question. "Well, Ralph that is quite simple. You must take the leap of faith. The leap of faith is something that many people have had to make at one point in time or another. I will tell you a story about a leap of faith that will better illustrate what you must do. There was once a fair maiden named Gertha. While this was not a pretty name she was very pretty indeed. One day Gertha decided that she wanted to leave her tower. Unfortunately there was no staircase down from her tower and only a small window for her to look out of. The tower was suspended over a void and no knight had come to rescue her as she had been promised. Feeling utter defeat she decided to abandon her quest for something more and began to throw her pillow around to amuse her self. This activity soon grew boring and then she began counting how many stone bricks made up the walls of her room. She grew disinterested with this activity around six hundred and finally determined that she needed to leave no matter the cost. She planned on leaving the next day and that night while she slept she dreamt of a sphere who told her to take a leap of faith. I bet you know who that sphere was, but I will tell you anyway. It was my second cousin who has the same job as me, going to people's dreams and telling them to take the leap of faith. My entire family actually works in that field and we cover a very very large area. Larger than you could imagine of course. Anyway, after having that dream the very next morning she jumped out her window into the void. Unfortunately as she was free falling a dragon was flying by and decided to eat her as a snack. Oh poor Gertha, she never did find what she was looking for but at least her misery was all put to an end."

Ralph looked at the sphere for a minute with confusion and then asked, "What does this all mean? I fail to see the point to your story. It was quite confusing. You want me to die? You want a dragon to eat me? You want me to jump off into a void? This doesn't make much sense. I am almost as confused and the time I contemplated how there can be light illuminating my home and yard when it exists in a void without a source of light to produce all the light that I perceived. I gave up on that one and if you don't give me a good explanation soon I may give up on this."

The sphere sighed and then said slowly. "You need to jump off of the edge of your yard into the void. There is a risk you may not survive but you must in order to ever experience something more. Take a dive off the cliff and it will lead you to another realm. Wherever you end up will lead you to more places and your journey will begin to take shape. This is the nature of what you must do and what I know you will do.

There is a sharpie on a string attached to the wall. You may continue adding on to the story if you wish, or go back to the hallway and continue onward.
