Only one way out

You throw the poodle in the pond. An alligator bobs up above the surface and grabs the poodle with its mouth. The poodle squeals loudly as the alligator drags it off under the water, never to be seen again.

You decide to see what is past the meadow. You walk north for three hours, and find an empty two-lane road, going east-to-west.
