Zombyric Execution

You're eyes adjust to the sunlight as you walk out onto the sidewalk of Main Street. A cool breeze slips past you, making your skin tingle. You begin walking beside the road, enjoying the warmth of the sunlight on your face. You look down at your watch. 8:39, it reads. You have an hour before your wife wakes up. You take Zeb Drive and wave to the mailman as he makes his daily runs. You then proceed to turn onto Small Street, the street where your college roommate, Gregory Hutchin, currently resides. You find his house and knock on the door, but there is no answer. He must have left to do something, you think. You turn to leave when you hear a small creak behind you. You look around and gasp. Gregory is looking at you, his eyes burning through your face. "What do you want?" he growls.
He was never this mean before, you think. "I just wanted to say hi," you tell him.
"Not now," he says. "Rebecca just dumped me."
"I'm sorry," you reply. "I really am."
You stare at each other in silence for a moment before you say, "I need to go. I have to get back before Susie wakes up."
"Bye, Pete," he says and shuts the door.
You depart from his driveway and are walking back home when you hear a sudden boom from above you. You look up and gasp in horror. An airplane is corkscrewing through the sky, its tail on fire. It shoots past you like a bullet. A few minutes later, you see an explosion on the outskirts of Grelatstown. You walk quickly back home and check on your wife. She is awake and is staring at you. "What's going on?" she asks.
"A plane just crashed," you explain.
You look out the window to see a small group of police officers walking by your house. You raise it and ask them what is happening. "We are going to check for survivors, sir," one of them replies. "We will be back."
"Wait!" you say. "Is my son coming?"
Your son, Fredrick Diamondson, joined the police force a few months back. "Yes, sir," they say. "But don't worry. We'll keep him safe."
You hear a groan in the group and realize that you just embarassed him. You leave the window and tell your wife the news. She seems to accept it and walks towards the bathroom. A few minutes later, you hear the shower come on.

Four hours pass and you still hear nothing from the investigators. Suddenly, you hear a voice behind you say, "They're all dead. I know it!"
You turn to your wife and say, "You're wrong! Don't talk like that!"
You and your son have always been best friends, too. You did just about everything together. Another hour passes, however, and you begin to doubt their survival. "What could have happened?" you ask your wife.
"I don't know," she says. "All I know is that we will find out."
