Super...fluous

"Breathe..." you think to yourself. "Exhale just about to the point of the breath's end... and... release!"

The arrow slips from between your leather-clad fingertips, silently and swiftly sailing through the autumn air toward the Roottree Golem. His eye has been focused on your girlfriend for just a millisecond too long. Now, his reign of terror over your village will come to an end, as his one vulnerability is pierced through, allowing his impermeable Woodfolk armor to loosen and fall from him. You begin to imagine being hoisted on the villagers' shoulders and paraded through the meat market square, with a sensual night of reward from your Anna to wrap up a perfect night...

"Clink!" the arrowhead bounces off his armored eyelid, for as luck would have it, he blinked half a moment after you shot. "Shit!" you involuntarily gasp, and the Roottree Golem's vengeful gaze has found his formerly hidden assailant's position. You are high in the trees, but your escape zipline is already tied off and ready for your escape.

He turns toward you and shoots a vineroot whip at your perch, which entangles it mere moments after you've jumped onto and are careening down your strong rope-line retreat. Yanking terribly at the tree, he sends a shockwave down the line that tosses you off it like a fly off a shaken stick. Crashing to the ground a good ten feet below, you are winded, but not dead. Fortunately for you, the Golem has assumed the latter and returns his focus to Anna just as you have groggily resumed your vision of the battle. With a sneer that could only be described as cold and vicious, the Golem raises one massive, root-covered leg above Anna's frail form. For a second that seems like an eternity, your gazes actually meet, and you can see in her fearless, blood-strewn face that she loves you, and you return your undying pledge to avenge her. The leg lands with a bone-crushing thud and Anna is gone.

Rather than issue a warcry that would most assuredly be your death-knell, you begin slithering further backwards into the forest and away from the fracas. When you think you're beyond the Golem's heightened hearing, you rise and run at full pace into the shelter of the Tirras forest...

It's too bad you've underestimated the Golem's perception. Rather than pillage the remains of your enfeebled village, he decides to give chase, and should be upon you within a few steps. Looking backward over your shoulder, you miss an open beartrap and fall headlong into it. Typically, even if one bear had fallen into such a trap, the remaining sharpened staves would be enough to impale and kill you. Tirrana herself must be watching over you this day, for you fall comfortably onto two dead bears, one right on top of the other - the first time you've ever seen such a thing. You quickly roll off the carcasses and hide beneath the overhang of the pit. As it happened, you fell exactly when the Roottree Golem thought he was stepping on you. He shall be searching the hole any second now...
