Miss Mary's voice had that tone we had all come to learn meant serious business. We had no idea what was happening outside except that for whatever reason, school was in lock-down mode, adults seemed really stressed, and there were no passes to the bathroom. You could hear sirens and traffic outside, car horns, and what sounded like yelling back and forth. There was an eerie quiet thought that had settled over the classroom in the last half hour.
