People Such As We

"We're here."

I looked up from my phone just as my mom was pulling into the driveway of a medium sized two-story house, our rented u-haul truck pulling up to the house after us. My mom got out of the car to talk to the 3 movers we hired to carry our furniture and other heavy things for us. After a few minutes, she turned in my direction.

She kept talking on and on about how much she loved it, how perfect it was, and how much she looked forward to living here, but I wasn't listening. I was still mad at her for practically dragging me across the country-all because she got a job transfer-weeks before I started my senior year. Now I had to start my senior year in a different state, with no friends or anything; this was going to suck, I just knew it.

I ignored her as I got out of the car to examine my new house. It was taupe colored, accented with slate gray, and had a big, red door. It actually looked cozy and welcoming.

I closed the passenger door, and opened the back seat door to let Denver, my 2-year-old Golden Retriever, out. She jumped down, her tail wagging furiously as she trotted all over the lawn, searching and smelling everything.
