Extend the Story - Add a Room

"Thank you," I say, trying not to let the relief in my voice be too blatant. I settle in beside him.

Our conversation is harmless. His name is Goodman Tossin, and he is happy to weave stories of his life for a willing listener. Yet I am not paying so much attention that I do not hear the horses coming up behind us.

Goodman Tossin must have seen the panic for my face, for he nodded behind him. "Hide under the blankets," he said.

We stopped a moment later, and I recognized Mother's voice as she badgered the Goodman about coming across any young ladies. His lying words were so convincing I almost believed him, and I was the young lady in question.

But while I listened, I heard Mother's voice crack, and it just about broke me. I could not imagine the fear she was experience over losing her only daughter, and I wanted nothing more than to go to her.

But that would be throwing away my life before it began.
