"A cute name," he said, crossing his arms. "A peasant name."

"Why, what a surprise," I said, a little insulted. "Seeing how I am a peasant, and all."

"No, you're not," Matthew said, sending a beguiling smile to me as he dropped onto a pew, sending his legs over the armrest. "You're a lady now. Country gentry, admittedly, as Father's only a squire, but that's better than nothing."

"I'd rather have nothing," I scoffed impulsively.

His blue eyes immediately fixed on mine. "You don't want to be married to my father?" he asked, he tone strange. I eyed him warily.
"It was my parents' arrangement. I'm only a girl," I say, avoiding anything dire.
