5/27/2007 - Freeze Frame
I brought out my camera, planning to blind the creature with the flash on full blast. We ran towards the exit, Dr. Blythe and Qara slipping by while Aubrey and I got its attention, firing a few bullets its way that seemed to hardly faze it. One of the bullets clipped its jaw, doing the only noticeable damage so far, twitching its head to the right. It kept charging us and reached Aubrey first, who ducked the beast's outstretched arms fluidly, tossing an unseen knife at the side of its head. I was able to get a closer look at it while it was stunned.
It was human, lacking any sort of extraneous hair or claws, but its limbs were extended unnaturally and the joints appeared knotted, like they'd been twisted around several times on a swivel. Its face was gaunt and slightly extended from forehead to jaw when compared with a normal human, but it wasn't incredibly grotesque, just unsettling. It looked familiar... almost. The thing whirled around, swiping at Aubrey with its blunt fingers, but he moved away like a mirage, hardly staying in the same place for more than a second. He signaled toward me, and I chucked the rest of my bag at the creature, bouncing it harmlessly off its knotted back. It turned hungrily toward me, staring at me with big, unblinking green eyes.
I pressed the shutter button, sending a wave of searing white light forward, coating the monster in an ice-like freeze frame. Its eyes didn't even close, absorbing the light and dismissing it entirely. It bared very human, blunt teeth at me, and then lunged. I tried to throw the camera at it in desperation, but it bounced right off its forehead and cracked on the stone floor. I was roughly slammed into, hitting the ground pinned underneath the disgusting, sweating humanoid. Aubrey yelled in shock, and I could hear him attempt to fire at the beast again, but it was too late. The creature locked its ivories around my neck and pulled, tearing a chunk out with them. There wasn't even any pain.
My vision began to blur, but I did remain conscious enough to see Aubrey blow the creature's brains out as it sat on my legs. With the security of knowing my friends would survive, I passed peacefully into the void.
