Dying Lake by KatIsBigLoser
You stand, trotting over to your soon-to-be-former-mentor. "Blackcherry.." You mew. She perks, blinking at you. "Frostpaw? What's up?" She asks, easing into a crouch. You shuffle your paws, then speak. "I'm going to ask Oakstar to be a medicine cat apprentice." Your mentor's eyes go wide, and she stares at you. "But- Frostpaw, aren't you happy being a warrior?" She whispers. Your tail tip flickers uncomfortably as you look to the side "Of course, but I'd be even happier if I was a medicine cat.." You look back at her. "It's not like I'm not changing Clans I'm here with you, still." She leans forward, brushing her muzzle alongside yours. "Okay, Frostpaw." She whispers. "You're like a daughter to me; I'll watch over you from the warrior's den." She murmurs. Your heart seems to expand and fill your chest as you purr softly. At last, you see Snowclaw and Applepaw exiting the leader's den. Applepaw seems calmer than before, and even a bit relaxed. Snowclaw still looks furious though, his tail tip flicking irritably, claws ripping out grass as he walks. You notice with amusement he's heading to the elder's den, probably to clean ticks like an apprentice! Applepaw is padding outside the camp, and from the way his ears flatten slightly, you know he's not doing anything exciting. Your heart pounds as you realize; it's time. Taking a deep breath, you let the scent of your Clanmates, your friends, family, and everything you hold dear wash over you. Lifting your muzzle, you pad into Oakstar's den. Anxiety suddenly washes over you. "Oakstar?" You mew into the cool, dark den. A pair of blue eyes flash as they look at you. "Yes, Frostpaw?" Her voice is smooth and mild, and you relax slightly. "I...I don't want to be a warrior." You mew. You wince, expecting her to gasp in shock or tell you no. This is why you're absolutely stunned when she purrs in amusement. "Oh, I could have guessed that.." She mews, and in the dim light, you can see her whiskers twitch. "You always gazed wistfully at the medicine cat den, and had an interesting connection to herbs, unlike your denmates." Oakstar pauses a moment, then looks up at you. "Frostpaw. You do realize..being a medicine cat means you may not bear kits, nor take on a mate?" She mews softly. Your chest clenches. You hadn't thought of that. You clear your throat, and speak. [NOTE: YOU CAN HAVE KITS, BUT IT IS AGAINST THE MEDICINE'WARRIOR CODE]
"I...was not aware. I'll just be a warrior." You sigh sadly.
