The elven cloaks have saved Frodo and Sam at the Black Gate once already, so why not again? They hide under their cloaks and wait for the Gate to open. When it does, they attempt to sneak in, but are spotted by the orcs coming out of Mordor. In their state of exhaustion, they are unable to fight off the orcs who kill them and return the Ring to Sauron.
