LOTR
Frodo and Sam follow Faramir through Gondor, towards Minas Tirith. After months of effort, Frodo fails his task as the One Ring falls into the hands of greedy men where it is all too easy for Sauron to take. Despite the massive attempt and sacrifice made by many Men, Elves, Ents, and Eagles, Middle Earth falls to its doom. Perhaps Gandalf was right when in Moria, he guessed that "[Gollum had] some part to play...for good or ill, before the end." (Tolkien 78) Bilbo's pity did indeed rule the fate of many.
