Outlander by Dustfinger
The next month flies by. The rest of the competitors are very helpful and you receive a great deal of assistance with your training. The spell books are more comprehensive than your own, but you soon find that there are spells in your book that cannot be found anywhere else. You hold on to those as it may be handy to have an extra ace up your sleeve.
Fiona, as it turns out, is not as harsh as she had seemed from the first impression. She is an accomplished fighter, and like many of those in the arena, she was born into imprisonment. The two of you train together and soon form a bit of a partnership. She knows a great deal, being the daughter of the Master Trainer, and she seems happy to share with you.
Unfortunately, all is not pleasant for the arena competitors. Daily, there are matches held in the arena and most all of the divisions of each team are involved. Mostly, the fights are against beasts to gain prestige, and almost always the beast loses. Once a week, however, a member of each division of the red team is called to do battle with their parallel members in the blue team. The three matches are performed in front of Elfan's king, and roughly every other week, one of the red team's magicians is killed.
After a month of training, you expect to be selected to fight in one of the beast battles, so you are not surprised when Giselda calls you over after practice one day.
"I have some news for you, Outlander; you are finally going to fight."
"Against what?"
"Against whom," she corrects you. When you give her and incredulous look, then continues. "I tried to prevent it, but the powers that be demanded that your first fight be against a human and in front of the king. Tomorrow, you will fight the Blood Maker."
"What!" Fiona cries, overhearing your conversation. "You kept me from a real match, but you are letting him in his first go around?"
"I tried to stop it but it was made very clear that the decision would be taken out of my hands. He fights tomorrow!"

The next day dawns. You can hear the roar of the crowd as the gate comes down and you see your opponent. Today, you will win or die. What do you do?
