Out of Time
"Uh.. yeah," your voice sounds raspy and irritated. "Sorry for staring, but I'm... the lifeguard," you roll your eyes at yourself mentally for making up such a stupid lie. "I was just making sure your daughter was safe. You know it's dangerous for small children out here with the high tide and all."
Your parents continue to stare into your eyes, questioningly.
Oh no. It doesn't look like they're buying it. Great job, Amara, you think sarcastically.
The questioning from you parents begins, "If you're the lifeguard, where's your rescue buoy?"
"My what?" In this moment, you panic and break out into a full on panic. You do not know which words to say. You do not know what to do. You are completely uncertain in this situation. "Um... um... um.." You nervously shift eye contact between your parents.
Before you have time to make up a better excuse, you realize that there’s blood on your clothes, where wound near your heart has opened. You fall onto the sand and seconds later, you die from cardiac arrest. In the real world, you flatline and your heart eventually gives out.
