Yes! After so much hope, so much failures in your life, this one thing is at last coming to pass. You barely dared to hope Penelope would accept, and yet, what else could she do? What else could you have expected?
Now at last, you stand, ready to be a man, ready to live up to all your father's promises; in these last weeks you can do no wrong in his eyes. (Well, he's actually your stepfather, but who's counting? Besides, you'd just assume keep your bio-dad out of today altogether.)
No matter. You are still Reginald Perry Shearwater, and today is your wedding day.
Now you examine your midnight blue tux one more time. You make sure everything is in order, especially the ring. It would not be proper without the ring; the whole day would be lost without the ring. It's an odd one, passed down through your mother's family, a rose and a serpent entwined.
"Hey, Reg! You almost ready?" It's the voice of your best man and old frat buddy Ignantz "Iggy" Pembroke. "Be there in a minute!" you respond, knowing old Ig is the one person you can trust this day of days.
