The Tale of Abigail
Abigail feels the edges of her mouth twist upwards into a smile. She really could use some food, and the old woman seems very nice. She reminds Abigail of her own grandmother.
"Alright," she says, taking the old woman's hand. "Let's go."
The old woman smiles and leads her to a grassy path to the very east of the main road. Together, they walk in silence until they reach a nice, quaint, cottage. The old woman pushes open the wooden door and flicks the lights on, filling the room with a nice, warm glow.
"Sit," she motions to Abigail, pointing at a comfy couch. Abigail obeys and sighs contentedly when she sinks into the warm, soft cotton.
The old woman brings her a hot cup of tea, and Abigail laps it up eagerly. Who knew that running through a forest could make you so thirsty? She tilts the cup to her lips, and takes a big gulp. Suddenly, the world turns black and her head comes crashing down onto the soft cushions of the sofa.
"The tea was drugged," Abigail thinks before she completely slips into unconsciousness.
When she wakes up, she is chained to the wall...in a place that she assumes to be the basement. She gasps when she realizes that she is not the only prisoner here. There are dozens of people; old men, pregnant women, and even a few schoolgirls that she recognizes. A paralyzing fear strikes her in the chest. What is happening?
"You're awake." A voice sounds. It's the old woman!
"Please. Let me go." Abigail pleads, but it's useless.
The old woman explains to her the reasons for locking up all of these people and eating them. She is a witch, stranded on this strange land, and she needs to consume the flesh of 10,000 humans before she can harness enough power to teleport herself back to her home, located on the moon. Abigail is to be the 10,000th human for consumption.
This piece of news is so confusing...so outrageous, that Abigail doesn't even know how to respond. And then she does. She opens her mouth, and screams.
The old woman- witch- stands up and stuffs a bone into her mouth, choking her. She sniffs, and then grabs a knife. "I wasn't planning on killing you yet, but I just cannot abide noisy children!" The knife glints under the light bulbs, temporarily blinding Abigail.
The old woman raises the knife, and points it at Abigail's chest. "Close your eyes, sweet dear. It's over."
And then it is.
