"YesÂ… Well," Jezirea struggled to come up with some way to get rid of him. Harmless or not, this guy was creeping her out.
"I'm going to Bygoville. It's at least a week's travel away, and I don't have enough rations to share. Fernsdale, on the other hand, is only a day's walk to the Southeast." Assuming she hadn't been thrown too far off course by the bandits.
"Well, if you're headed to Bygoville, it's actually in that direction," he said, pointing almost in the opposite direction they'd previously been headed.
Jezirea felt embarrassed for a moment, before remembering. "Hey! Didn't you just say you didn't know the way to town?" she asked incredulously.
He sputtered for a moment, looking like a deer caught in an archer's crosshairs.
"THERE SHE IS!"
Shit. Jezirea spun towards the shout and saw figures in the distance, rushing towards her through the trees.
The bandits! They'd still been searching for her? Persistent bastardsÂ…
Use me.
What? Jezirea spun around. That voice, it had sounded as if it came from all around, and from within at the same time. Then she noticed the strange man from the tomb had vanished. Just great, Jezirea thought. At least he had been harmless after all, but he was apparently also a coward. She hadn't even noticed him cut and run.
Jezirea was about to turn her attention back to the bandits, when a glint of sunlight caught her eyes amid the grass and forest debris. She looked back, and saw that a sword lay upon the ground. How had she missed that?
Use me! the voice came again, inside her own head, this time much more insistent. She could hear the bandits getting closer. It was time to make a choice.
You've already been down this dangerous road. Just run!
