You hurry downstairs and out to the front of the house to find your brother. The speed at which you pass through the kitchen suggests to Mother that you're going to get on with the chores, and so you are spared the wrath of her terrible wooden spoon today.

Blake offers you a smile and ruffles your hair as you approach. "Don't look so deathly serious," he grins, flicking your forehead. With the same hand, he reaches down and pats the purse of grocery money. "Mother's miscounted the shopping budget. That'll be enough to buy you something in town - I won't tell if you don't."

You smile, despite the lingering annoyance at the hair-ruffling. Sure, Blake had been a right prig this morning, but in the end he had your back like any good brother should.
