Excavation II: Lost in New York
"I know this is going to be hard for you to believe Daniel, but remember when I went on that excavation to Banda Island in Africa?"
"No. I thought you decided not to go on that trip. You decided to go to Madagascar."
"No Daniel. I don't know what the universe is up to, but I DID go on that trip."
She began to describe the story to her unbelieving brother. By the end, almost three hours later, he had no choice but to believe her tale. After all, she was sitting in the flesh right in front of him.
"This is just crazy," he said. "This must mean that you are leading two lives. The Lois I know went to Madagascar and not only discovered the remains of some ancient dinosaur but also an entire clan of Mayan peoples. You won numerous awards, became famous, and have been traveling the world ever since. Right now, your doppelganger is in Africa, with your two children."
"I have kids?" Lois asked. She had always thought she would get married, yes, but children were never in the picture. Not with the kind of work she was doing.
"Yes. Claire is 50 and Robbie is 45. They have families of their own now. You took them on a vacation to Africa as a sort of reminiscence, since you're now almost 90 years old. I couldn't believe you were going at that age, but you've always been an adventure woman."
Lois couldn't believe what she was hearing. If Daniel was correct, she was living two completely different lives. One life as an established mother of two, one life as a lost excavation archaeologist in a world that couldn't possibly be more foreign to her; one life that was almost over, and the other just beginning.
