In the Forests of New France by anonymous651
You realize that you will not free yourself alone. The prospect of cutting off your own leg is distasteful, and it doesn't take much thought to realize that you would be equally stranded and perhaps more likely to die if you tried that maneuver. There's not much left for you to do but scream out for help.

You aren't really sure if there even is a trapper nearby. Most traps are set in winter, when the fur on the animals is thickest and worth the most. But the trap doesn't look neglected, so you wonder if perhaps it was intentionally left out to gather food. It could, of course, have been forgotten... But you don't want to think about that.

Rearranging yourself around your fastened limb, you cry out at the top of your lungs.
"Help! Anyone, if you can hear me, help! I'm trapped!" You chuckle mirthlessly at the thought of being so literally trapped, but your emotions are far more of fear than any kind of joviality.

You could swear you hear the sound of branches breaking, of something approaching. Your first thought is that perhaps the trapper really is coming, perhaps you are saved after all. Then your panic sets in deeper, and all you want to do is flee--run away, as far from this place as you can. But your leg is caught, and you know of no escape unless someone comes to help you.

Still. Perhaps your messing with the mechanism has loosened it. Perhaps you could wrench it free, if you tried hard enough. Another sickening stab of fear, as you notice just how dark the forest is.

Something is very close. In a sudden panic, you grab the jaws of trap, locked in their iron grip, and pull against them with all the force you can muster, attempting to surge upward and out of their grasp.

The wrenching feeling against your leg is an intense pain, something you aren't sure you can deal with. You try to twist free, convinced that you can feel some give in the trap's hold, but realize belatedly that you were only imagining it. You land awkwardly on the leg, with a jarring snap, and find that the shock and blood loss pushes you into unconsciousness.

You can only hope that help is indeed on its way, as you won't last long like this.
